Reverse Osmosis
Reverse Osmosis (RO) is a method of producing pure water; a process by which a solvent passes through a porous membrane in the direction opposite to that for natural osmosis when subjected to a hydrostatic pressure greater than the osmotic pressure.
RO is used for water filtration in a wide range of applications including desalination of seawater and in kidney dialysis machines. RO is also used to purify drinking water by forcing untreated water molecules through a semipermeable membrane or filter. The membrane blocks contaminants and the impurities are subsequently expelled from the environment. The RO is capable of rejecting 99.9% of bacteria and is therefore used frequently in the design of pharmaceutical pure water systems.
